Subaru Repair: 05 Forester Clutch, automatic clutch, clutch assembly

Question
We have a 2005 Subaru Forester XS 2.5 with 49,000 miles on it. A few months ago, we noticed a hesitation in the drive train, and a slight shuddering in the steering wheel, whenever making tight turns from a stop.  We have been told by the dealer this needs a replacement of the clutch transfer plate, I think he said.  I understand it is covered under the power train warranty.  Should the entire transmission be replaced, or only the automatic clutch assembly?  I want to be sure to get any needed work done under warranty, which ends in June 2010.

Answer
Shirley,

Regardless of what I tell you the dealer is always going to do the minimum required to make the repairs, and thats because that is all Subaru will pay for.

The repair that is going to be made is to the Transfer clutches for the AWD system, which isn't disengaging at low speeds causing the binding sensation.

Typically there is no reason to replace the entire transmission unless a bigger problem is found upon tear down, which would be unusual.
