Subaru Repair: Oil Leak on Subaru Impreza, auto machanic, subaru impreza

Question

I have an oil leak with my '98 Subaru Impreza 2.2L Sport Outback (hatchback).

The mechanic I went to said it's coming from where the timing belt is located.

It's probably the camshaft seals.  My question is: He said that if the timing belt

gets oil on it it can become brittle and break prematurely.  He said it's a good

idea to change the belt because of this.  There's no extra labor to change the

belt.  Although his price for a new belt is $110. It currently has 86K miles and

I've already changed the timing belt at 62K miles as a preventive maintenance.

Unfortunately the auto machanic who changed the timing belt didn't change the

camshaft seals with it.  which I think he didn't understand the concept of

'preventive maintenance.'

Is this new mechanic's warning of changing the timing belt due to possibly getting oil on it

justified?  Thanks,

Answer
The timing belt is due every 60k on a 1998, so it would be due 60k from now if you replace it, the belt price is too high should be closer to $70.00.

If the cam seals are leaking oil on the belt then yes it should be done.

If it's just for maintenance I would suggest it to save some money over the long run, but its your choice.
