Subaru Repair: Intermittent ABS light and groan in brakes, subaru forester, subaru forester 2003

Question
Subaru Forester 2003, 5-speed manual, 170K miles, great car.  Over the past month or so, when I am slowing or stopping, my front brakes groan and I feel a movement, almost like a moving cable, under the brake pedal.  It happens especially when the clutch is engaged (but I have to do that anyway to slow or stop) and when I am going over a bumpy road.  Recently the ABS light has started coming on and off intermittently as well, but it's mostly off.  I don't fully trust my Subaru dealership any more, because they are constantly trying to upsell me with repairs I don't really need.  Can you help?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Sandi,

There really isn't anything that can be done without some one diagnosing the ABS light and checking the noise for you locally.

May be look for someone independent from the dealer who is familiar with Subaru.
