Subaru Repair: Engine Seals, flange gaskets, outback legacy

Question
I have 1 '98 Outback Legacy 2.5l.  At least the rear main seal started leaking this week with oil dripping and smoking off the exhaust.  I live in eastern PA.  What would you give for a ballpark estimate to have it and any other leaking seals replaced?  Vehicle has just under 180K miles.  Would a used engine make more sense?

Thanks,
Carl

Answer
Hey Carl,

The common leak at the rear of the engine is the Separator plate.  Being that you are in PA. rust may be a factor in the repair costs.  But this would be the same issue if you went with a used motor ,which would be hard to find anyway and may needs repairs it self.  At our shop the price to replace the separator plate with the updated parts is about $500.00.  This is to pull the transmission, replace the separator plate and put the transmission back in with new exhaust flange gaskets and nuts.  At 180k if you really want to go to 300k  with the Outback and you like the car you might consider a total engine reseal. It is a better way to go in the long run
