Subaru Repair: catalytic converters, 1997 Legacy wagon, subaru legacy wagon, california emmisions

Question
I need new converters on my 1997 Subaru Legacy wagon. I've tried to research it myself - very confusing.I'm in CA, so it seems thats completely different than the rest of the country. And there are 2? A front and a rear? Parts vary widely in price, from 160 to 499. And one parts place told me to get one from a junkyard. How to decide what to do?

Answer
It may be confusing if you go aftermarket, or used. There are 2 converters, some cars it was 1 pipe with 2 converters, or 2 seperate converters. You also need to hope the O2 sensors come out of them, or you will have to replaced those also. Through a dealer the entire job can run anywhere from $900.00-$1400.00. I wouldn't go used though. And 95% of the subaru's out there are california emmsions. I live in NY and 99% of the cars i see are all California emmisions. Good luck
