Subaru Repair: Timing belt, timing belt tensioner, service interval

Question
Hi
I have two Legacy Outbacks, a 2001 and a 2003. One has 50K and the other 57K. My manuals say at the 60K service to inspect the timing belts and replace them at 100 to 125K miles. I always thought these belts were to be replaced every 60K miles. When do you think I should replace them. I don't want them to break since my wife and daughter are the primary drivers.

Answer
The service interval is 105k for both vehicles. But the age should also be considered, our rule of thumb is 6 to 7 years or 100k.The belt probably wont break prior to the defined mileage, but what will happen is the belt will stretch past the point where the hydraulic automatic timing belt tensioner can keep the proper tension on it.This can result in decreased performance, and fuel economy. Also not to scare you but if the belt becomes loose enough it could jump time.I wouldn't worry about the 2003 yet but i would put some thought into having the 2001 done. Also plan on replacing the tensioner and i would suggest the water pump at the same time.
