Subaru Repair: oil leaks, replacing head gaskets, oil leaks

Question
I have a 1988 subaru gl wgn with a 1.8 eng.Is it best to pull eng and trans,or just eng to replace all gaskets and oil pump?

Answer
If you are replacing the oil pump, cam and front crank seals there is no need to pull the motor. If you are replacing head gaskets or cam case O-rings then you should pull the motor out.But leave the Trans in the car.It is difficult to remove both at the same time and there is no need to pull the Trans with the engine only to separate it later to do a rear main seal.Which by the way you should replace if you take the time to pull the motor out.
