Subaru Repair: 02 legacy will not hold on 1st or 2nd. Cluster lights do not light N, 2 or 1., head gaskets, inhibitor switch

I recently had my head gaskets replaced.  Shortly after I noticed on the inst. cluster that N, 2 and 1 do not light up.  I asked the dealer and they said the bulbs were burnt out.  I removed the cluster and checked the bulbs.  The bulbs are good and do light up when I tested with a 9v battery.  Also, when I put car into 2ND gear or 1ST gear, the car will not hold on either gear.  The car drives normally, shifting 1-2-3 even when the gear shift is in 1 or 2.  I can shift between 3 and D and that does work properly.  I am guessing it must be either a solenoid or the inhibitor switch.  But I can't think the switch would all of the sudden not work in just N, 2 or 1.  Any suggestions???  If it would be a solenoid, which one and what color solenoid?  Thank you!

The place to start is to put a scanner on the vehicle and see what gear the TCM thinks the car is in.And if it is recognizing the different gear inputs when the vehicle is shifted from one range to another.Also if any codes are set.Hope that helps you
