Subaru Repair: power steering pump replacement, legacy outback, power steering pump

Question
Dealer said power steering pump needs replacing on '98 Legacy Outback wagon. Can I do this myself or is it a bear of a job? I really don't have the $500.+ they are asking for. Any special considerations? Thanks,  -J

Answer
Two thoughts 1.If it is leaking you can rebuild it with a seal kit, much cheaper than replacing it.This assumes that the function of the pump is ok and it is only leaking fluid.2. Is a used pump from a wrecking yard. Not knowing if you have the proper tools and how mechanically inclined you are its hard to say if your up to the task .On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the toughest i would rate it a 4,The back bracket to engine block bolt can be a little difficult.Hope that helps
