-----Question-----
My 1997 Subaru Outback is stuck in park. I've had this problem for a few months but am usually able to move it after a few tries. Today, nothing worked. It's a manual transmission, 140k miles (new engine at 98k due to leaking valves)...any ideas??
THANKS!!!

Stuck in park? With a manual transmission? Need some clarification. If you have PRNDL or park, reverse, neutral, drive, low...then you have an automatic transmission. If you have a clutch pedal that must be pressed in to change gears...then you would have a manual transmission. If you are really stuck in park, and you are pressing the brake pedal before trying to shift, then the most common problem is soda, coffee, or other stuff spilled on the shifter. Also, there is an overide method to get the transmission out of park if this happens. Follow up with more info and I be I can help you a little more.    Z

Thanks so much for replying. Sorry, you're right, I do have an automatic transmission. After being unable to get it out of park yesterday morning, I tried again last night & it went out of park right away - no problems. But - this morning, once again, I'm unable to move out of park. I can hear the click when I depress the button on the side of the gear shift but it won't move at all.
THANKS! ..much appreciated.!!!!!

Do you hear anything when you press the brake pedal? Also, is it cold in the morning when it will not come out of park? Warm in evening or night when it will come out of park? If it is temperature related, then I bet you have a very dirty shifter mechanism. Also, there was a recall on the 97's for a shifter problem, and several other things. Can you email me your vehicle i.d. number? I can run it and find out if your car is involved in any recalls. Also, if you email me, I can email you a pdf file that will show you how to get the car out of park until you can get the real problem fixed.
