Subaru Repair: 98 subaru outback - new to me, needle nose pliers, subaru outback

Question
Looks like the plugs are a bear to change. I would probably remove the battery and washer fluid tank for better access - am I missing something?  Also the plugs speced for the outback are $18.00 each -ngk platinum. Kragen also has Champion that it says are OK, but the manual only lists the ngk. Comments?

Also is there any adjustment of freeplay for the hydrolic clutch.

Many thanks,  Mike

Answer
Hello Mike,

Yes, those plugs are the most difficult of any Subaru engine. I personally have a little trick, that I use. I go from underneath, using a pair of long needle nose pliers to pop the wires off. Then I use a all chrome regualar plug socket + stubby 3/8 drive wobbly extension + 3/8 swivel + 3/8 to 1/4 adapter, and then I use my 1/4 air ratchet. I know it seems like a lot, but it is the best combo we have come up with. If these tools are not available to you, you can go from the top, by removing the washer bottle. You should be able to leave the battery in, and using whatever combination you can come up with that works for you. As far as the plugs go. I also just called our parts dept, and they quoated the Subaru Plat. plugs at about $12.50 each. I believe they are NGK.  I hope this helps you.  :)
