Towing Issues: towing issue, tow companies, storage fees

Question
IF YOUR IN AN ACCIDENT AND TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FROM THE SCEEN AND LAW ENFORCEMENT HAS A TOW COMPANY TOW YOUR MOTORCYCLE, AND THEY DON'T TAKE IT TO THE ADDRESS ON YOUR LICENSE BUT TOW IT TO THEIR YARD, IS THAT OK FOR THEM TO DO?

Answer
Well I hope that you are ok and all that, but ALL CAPS is considered yelling on the Internet. I know you are mad but !!

Ok, lets look at this in a different light. First of all the tow company is a private business not a tax payer supported one like the police or fire department. That being said, you went to the hospital for treatment (which also requires payment or arrangement) and I do not know if anyone else was at your house.

Now they generally do not provide tow companies with the address of the vehicle owner (some places do though on police custody forms) and since they are providing a service for which they need to get paid it would be hard to take your vehicle home and not get paid for the service.
And in some places the laws state that the tow company can only release the vehicle to the "REGISTERED OR LEGAL OWNER". If it was only registered to your, then your GF, Wife or Brother would not be able to take custody of the vehicle LEGALLY.

And lets say for the sake of discussion you live in an apartment complex and they have rules and regulations forbidding parking - storing of wrecked vehicles on site. That would mean it could be towed again.

Now if the vehicle goes to the storage yard, your vehicle is secure, protected and in most cases your insurance company comes in and checks out the vehicle and determines if it is repairable or a total.
And they do pay for towing and storage fees, (if you have the correct insurance coverage)

And each city or state tends to have different laws which affect how tow companies operate, and since I have no information on where this happened, I gave you generalized information.
