QuestionHi, my boyfriends car was illegally towed tonight. What happened was, he drove his car to work and park on the side of the street, theres no signs or line, or not even on a corner of the street, you have to realize this is his job, he parks around his work area all the time. And its a regular street parking spot alongside with other cars. He's a counselor for high school kids and had to take the kids on a school trip today didnt get back till 10pm. From 10am to 10pm that is exactly 12 hrs, there is also no meters around that area as well. No signs no meters. We are talking about legal car spaces. Came back from the trip to find his car towed. The cops said this is the second time they heard of someones car being towed from that area for street parking for no real apparent reason. I mean, if it was illegal he shouldve gotten a ticket, but it wasnt. No ticket, just towed. The tow truck company is charging him 185.00 we live in the state of NY, in nyc exactly.
Does this constitutes as illegal tow? And how do we dispute this? he's a good man, counsels troubled teens in the neighborhood, these kind of things should not happen to good people. Especially since he did not parked illegally at all. By the way, the place he works around is pretty quiet, mainly schools and parks. He parks around the same two to three blocks everyday. Never had trouble. Please Help. Thank You!
AnswerOk this happened in NYC if I am reading this right.
As a general rule everywhere, the City owns and controls the parking on streets and authorizes private tow companies to remove vehicles, or uses their own department to do that. Yes NYC has its own tow service. But I do not know if they also use private companies.
Now as to legal or not, I am not sure why it was towed either, but to me it does sound a bit fishy.
