Towing Issues: towing issues, feet in the fire, fire lanes

Question
Richard you answered a question in 2008 with this remark:
Boston has many many laws regarding towing, but this is one of the easiest to understand...

Signage is always an issue, some people think signs should be in each space, while others think that signs at the entrances work good.
Plus given weather, vandalism, and just plain lack of understanding of the laws for posting signs makes it hard sometimes to be legal or keep signs posted.

Where may I ask are these "many laws"  I can find none other than the one you linked to Chap. 266 Sec. 120D, which simply states "posted notice"  I checked the town ordinances of the town in which i was towed and again there was no ordinance defining minimum, sufficient notice of trespass signage.

Answer
when I answer questions about towing laws and signs I tend to generalize some answers.  State laws like the one above are good examples of what is supposed to be done.

But like any laws, I can not find all of them online or even current ones due to the amount of references online with outdated information at times.

Now the local laws, are generally hard to find references to since most locations do not put laws online.

Now you found one of the key issues in many towing lawsuits. Posted notice is the problem and it is a very broad and vague issue. Courts have field days with it in some locations.
Generally one sign at the entrances is all that is needed to comply with most laws. Some locations want more signs, do create rules and regulations as such.

I have seen some proposed laws where they wanted signs in each space, but they got shot down when people wanted them in Spanish or other languages.
Can you image what that would look like to comply with that issue in the parking lot.

Plus at times the "overwarning" can create its own issues when there are to many signs... Geeze there is no signs for parking in the aisles - driveway. Things like that.  Or there is not a sign every 4 feet in the fire lanes.

Consider that they only post speed limit signs every so far apart. Does that mean you can speed between the signs and only do the limit when it is visible ?
