Towing Issues: Excessive towing fees, tow fee, storage charge

Question
I parked my car in a vacant lot approximately one block from the Plainfield, NJ municipal court house at around 7:00pm to attend court.  When I returned to the lot at about 8:30 the car had been towed.  There were no signs stating that parking was not allowed or that vehicles parked there would be towed. The tow yard was across the street from the court house, only one block away from the site of the tow, however, I was charged $300, on the same night, to retrieve my car.  Are these fees regulated and does this seem to be an excessive amount.  Who do I contact to complain?

Answer
Well New Jersey has recently changed the rules (on a state level) regarding towing vehicles from Private Property.. I have lost the link that I had but going by memory here the rates have been regulated now...

$300.00 does seem like a lot of money, especially for a 1 block tow, but remember there are a few other issues which are in the total price.   You admit it was at night (after normal business hours for the tow company office) and that would allow the charging of an "after hours release fee or gate fee"

And then even though it was only there for part of the day then it would have a storage charge...

Just using some numbers here that I am making up since I can not find the links and information I had (stupid puter crashed about 3 weeks ago and I just got it back up and running)...

These numbers I am making up so understand they are not correct..

Tow Hook up   $ 125.00
Tow Mileage   $   5.00
Dollies       $  45.00
Storage       $  25.00
After Hours fee  62.50  (its generally 1/2 the tow fee)

And then taxes if they apply would be $262.50 in my made up price list
you can see that its not all that bad when it is broke down that way..

I wish I could find the laws, it would help.. Sorry I can not provide specific info, but at 10 minute search did not do anything but find news articles without the laws listed.
