Towing Issues: towing my 4x4, lift tow, tow companies

Question
I was arrested for driving on expired license. the tow company said they had to use a doly because my truck was a 4x4  ( 86 f-250/4x4 ) they are charging me a extra $ 150.00 for the doly. they said the state makes them use a doly on any 4x4.  Is this true or a way to get more money. Its only a 4x4 when front hubs are locked, if not its just a regular truck.  Why a doly ?

Answer
You didn't mention your city or state for reviewing the police towing requirements but it's normal practice for all tow companies to prevent any possible damage to any vehicle while towing. Using a wheel lift and dolly on a 4x4 does eliminate the possibility for any drivetrain damage. There are methods and procedures that can be used to wheel lift tow some 4x4's but the dolly takes all questioning out of the equation.

Again, not knowing which city or state you are located, $150 additional for the use of a dolly does appear above average. Most police authorized tow companies are required to post rates with the police department for approval. I suggest checking with the police department that requested the tow for the approved or authorized rates allowed.
