Towing Issues: license plates, value of my car, storage fees

Question
My car was totaled in an accident in July that was not my fault.  I received a check for the value of my car  a few weeks later and I was told to sign and send the title to the insurance co. which I did.  I have been trying to get the plates off the car (which has been sitting at a storage facility since the time of the accident until now!!!)  Insurance co is claiming that they will only pay storage fees for a few days and that I am responsible for the rest.  The storage company is refusing to give me my plates so that I can surrender them to DMV.  I am still paying insurance on the car!!!   What deal can I strike with the storage co to get my plates back?

Answer
What state are you in and who was your insurance company? You should not have to strike any deal. The plates in most states stay with the owner so you can transfer them to another vehicle. I would immediately contact your insurance company, that's what you pay for.
