Towing Issues: max tow weight for 2001 GMC Jimmy, rear cargo area, rear gear ratio

Question
I have a 2001 Jimmy 4 door, 4 wheel drive with a tow button. I am assuming this means a factory installed tow package. I have a 2001 Hybrid trailer with a weight (unloaded) of 3500lbs. According to my Jimmys owners manual I can tow either 4200lbs. or 5800lbs. depending on the rear gear ratio. How do I find the rear gear ratio? What should I consider as my max tow weight. I've look on the Internet with no luck.

Answer
There should be a label in the glove box or rear cargo area that will list the gear ratio for your vehicle. Most are equipped with a 3:73 gear ratio. Aside from contacting a dealership or owners manual (which you can order on the internet) if the label is not still attached. Tongue weight will make a difference but The owners manual or a dealer should be able to look up those specs for you rather easily. Thye towing capacity is usually rated between 5400-5900 lbs depending on the equipment installed on the vehicle.
