Towing Issues: minivan towed, storage fee, storage fees

Question
Lansing,IL. police sent me notice that i received on 6-11-09 that my van will be towed & that i have 10-14dys from notice to contact them. When i went to check on van on 6-12-09 it was gone. police wouldn't give me any info until after it was suppose to be towed. Called again 2 and a half wks. later, police said they didn't tow van apartment comlex did. Called apartment complex to get tow companys number, tow company said it was towed on 6-8-09. Isn't that illegal, and what can i do if the apartment mgr. beat the police towing my van and 3dys. before i got the notice.

Answer
it all depends on how the laws in Lansing are set up. In some locations the police have to order the tow from private property and in other areas the property owner - manager can have the vehicle removed from the property...

It sounds to me like the vehicle was left at the apartment (you used to live there and moved ???) and the police had a report of the abandoned vehicle and the property management did not know that the police had the report but discovered the vehicle was illegally parked or abandoned and had it towed away.

It is the property owners rights to have vehicles which are illegally parked or abandoned removed from their property at the vehicle owners expense.

Now as to the 2 1/2 weeks till you found out where it went, I have to question why you waited that long specially if you went there on the 12th to check on it and it was gone then. I would of been asking the property management about it then also, instead of just waiting for the police to tell you it was towed.

Something does not smell right here in what you are telling me. There sounds like major information is missing from the question.

But in any case the vehicle was towed and you as the owner are responsible for towing and storage fees (yes even the 2 1/2 weeks) before you found out where it is at...  And the storage fee goes up each day till the vehicle is removed from the tow company storage yard.

Good luck and I hope this helped a bit.
