Towing Issues: Towing with a 2005 Jeep Cheroke Laredo, jeep grand cheroke, load levelers

Question
My husband and I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cheroke Laredo with a 4.7l V8.  From what we can see from both the owner's manual and what we've found on the internet it has a tow rate of 6500lbs.  We also have recently purchased a 26' travel trailer with a dry weight of 4650 lbs, so in theory the jeep should be able to handle it with some room to spare.

We are finding that its not pulling the trailer well.  Sometimes when larger trucks (18 wheelers) go by the draft moves us around a bit....sometimes with bad wind we get jostled around as well.

Other than purchasing an new truck (which we prefer not to do) is there anything that we might be able to add to our jeep that would help us out on the road?  Its mostly on the big interstate highways where we have the issues.  We aleady have a stablizing bar (which we are still trying to figure out completely) and load levelers but are not sure if there is something else we can try.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Well this is kind of an area where I do not like answering questions as it is RV oriented.

But I have some information here for you..

First of all the Jeep weighs in at 4613 pounds curb weight, and you say that you have a trailer with a dry weight of 4650 pounds.  Yes your trailer weight is more than your Jeep...

Now the fact that the "roadability" issue is key here. When pulling a trailer you have now moved over to what is generally called a "HIGH PROFILE VEHICLE"

This means that you have a larger area for wind, or draft or what ever you want to call it to impact. Think of it as a sail on a sailboat. More side wind on the sail and the more it leans... That is generally what is happening to you when trucks pass or the wind is blowing.  Its very common, in fact a lot of semi trucks get blown over during high winds with light or no loads in the trailers.

What to do, well that area is not one that I am familiar with methods to solve. I am not sure what stabilizer bars would do with this kind of issue or anything like that. Load levelers tend to keep the vehicle axis level not nose up, rear down kind of issue.

How this little bit of information helps, but like I said its not really my area of expertise.
