Towing Issues: Towing a Landcruiser Across country, tandem axle trailer, household belongings

Question
I am moving across country. I would like to tow a 1997 Toyota Landcruiser on a trailer behind a rental truck.
The 2006 Landcruiser has a Curb weight 5425lbs and a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating -- GVWR 6925lbs. Mine is close to these specs if not the same.

Is a Landcruiser to heavy to trailer?
Are there laws which limit the weight of a trailered vehicle?
How can i accomplish this?
What kind of truck and trailer do i need?
Thanks
Chris

Answer
Any weight vehicle CAN be trailered, it's just a question of the size of the equipment.

In your case you will need a tandem axle trailer rated to carry at least 7000lbs.  This means the trailer and cargo will weigh in at about 10,000lbs (depending on the construction of the trailer).

I would not even want to try to tow this much weight with anything less than a 1 Ton truck.  I would prefer something bigger (1 Ton Dualley, 3 Ton...).  If you are moving it across the country I would be tempted to have it transported for you and you just have to worry about moving yourself and your household belongings.

I would be reluctant to tow a 10,000lb trailer behind any kind of rental truck and would be surprised if you could find a rental company willing to let you.

If you decide to go ahead and tow this yourself, you will need to check the laws in every state through which you plan to travel.  Some require weight distribution/sway control above a given weight.  Others will have other requirements.  Some may even put you into a commercial class when combined with the weight of your tow vehicle and may require you to have a commercial driver's license.

Thanks for the question,
