Towing Issues: motorcycle hitch carriers., gmc 1500, factory tow

i am considering buying a motorcycle hitch carrier for my truck. 2003 gmc 1500 sierra x-cab, 4x4, quadrasteer, with factory tow pckg. i also have the optional push button rear suspension setting for towing. is the receiver wgt limited to 500 lbs? is that just the suggested limit? my bike weight is 540. would that 40 lbs really make a difference?

I would upgrade the hitch, the bike plus the weight of the hitch is exceeding the hitch rating, which isn't a suggestion. If you ran across a stickler (DOT officer) you would quickly wish you upgrading the hitch. Also, I would check if your truck could handle the additional weight. The payload rating above the rear axle is completely different than the weight carrying capacity hanging off the back of truck.
