Towing Issues: unfair?, state statues, certified mail

Question
Let me tell you the whole story so i can get a whole perspective. First my car got stolen so i reported it to the police. A month later my car was found striped a few cities down. The police told me that aamco towing company has it and told me to call my insurance. since i only had liability, my insurance didn't do anything but told me i wasn't covered for this. Later i got a notice from Aamco that they were going to sell my car and if i wanted it back, i would have to pay a certain fee. since it was non-drivable, i just left it with them assuming that since they sold it, it'll be all over. few months later they sent me a bill for the towing and the 30 days storage fee which comes to $2500. i was outraged because i had no idea they were charging me behind my back. i mean now they want me to pay the charges. i was wondering, all this happened without any written or verbal consent from me. i don't get how this towing system works, it all sounds like a scam and now they're trying to take advantage of me. well i just want to know if there's anything i can do to avoid this charge because it just doesn't seem right to give them money to something i never asked for in the first place.

Answer
First off $2500 for the tow and 30 days of storage is alittle high, I would check with the city or police for the proposed fees deemed acceptable or in accordance with the law. Also did you ever receive any certified mail from the tow company for notification. I also suggest checking your state statues involving stolen vehicles. Here in VA and most other states the tow company must give the vehicle back at no charge to the vehicle owner within a certain amount of time of notification and the tow company gets reimbursed by the state with the proper forms filed. Also works vise versa for the vehicle owner if you decided to pick up the vehicle within a certain amount of time and seek reimbursement from the state. The part that hurts you is you waited too long because time was of the essence. I completely understand that you didn't know about the proper channels but stating "you didn't know" doesn't work to well in court if it went that far. The tow company is certainly due for the work and processing of your vehicle. Try contacting the tow company's manager or owner and maybe a settlement can be reached. My suggestion is to get everything in writing!
