Towing Issues: Towing fees, tow yard, storage fees

Question
I am an Indiana resident. We just had a trailer towed by the Police dept. The tow yard is only open from 8:00am to 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday. It was after 5:00 when this happened. We had to wait until Monday to get the trailer out and incurred expenses of 20.00 per day ($60.00) extra on top of the towing and milage fees. How can a tow company charge for storage on days they are closed and we are not able to get the vehicle out?  This seems unfair.

Answer
Yes they can charge for storage as long as the vehicle is in the yard...

Now generally, the tow company will release vehicles on weekends and at night but they charge a "after hours release fee" or "gate fee" which at times can be a lot more than the storage fees to the next business day...

Since this was a police ordered tow, there is also the possibility that the contract restricts when vehicles can be released. I have seen that before...

Hope this helps you.
