Towing Issues: sling towing, ford f350, unibody cars

Question
i have a 75 ford F350 sling tow truck.
How do I tow newer vehicles or vanagons with a metal duct below the bumper without damaging them?
Newer vehicles have plastic air dams built into the bumper.
They do get damaged when I pull the vehicle into the air.
Thanks,
Jeff

Answer
It is not advised to sling newer vehicles because of the problems mentioned. Also I have experimented with some junk cars and have found on some unibody cars that it does slightly bend the vehicle body. It's very slight but noticeable at the gaps/spacing between the doors and front fenders. If you notice this you can really tell the difference when opening and closing the doors.

Anyway, back to your original question. You could use a 5 foot 4x4, 6x6 or a combination of both and place across the chains under the radiator support, engine cradle or other major structure support. What you are trying to do is gain clearance/spacing under the lower valance/spoiler so the tow bar and sling doesn't come in contact with the plastic bumper. Make sure that whatever blocking method used is strong enough to support the weight because the contact points are now the pressure points supporting the lifting weight.
