Auto Glass: 2004 Chrysler Sebring Sedan Power Windows, 2004 chrysler sebring, chrysler sebring

Question
2004 Chrysler Sebring Sedan w/2.4l. Owned since new, 118,000 miles. A few years ago rear power windows started to be hard to move up or down and sometimes stuck. Now they don't work at all. Last year passenger front window became inoperable. Yesterday Drivers window went down but would not come up. I banged on the door while pressing the button and eventually it came back up. Now it doesn't do anything. Also, about 3 years ago I noticed that none of the window switched on the drivers door would work unless the door was closed or open less than 3 inches or so. I now have 4 windows that do not work. I am a fairly handy DIYer with more time than money. Where should I start to try to solve this problem.

Answer
Hi Tom,

I haven't seen a lot of problems on this vintage of small Chrysler sedans, so I don't have an immediate answer.

Based on your experience yesterday, I suspect that you have a bad window motor on the driver door.  I don't believe there is a good aftermarket motor available for this model.  I think a motor from Chrysler will cost around $100.

As for the rear doors, you can try slamming the doors while holding down the window switch to see if the window motors are sticking. If that doesn't get the windows moving again you are going to have to approach this in a step-by-step manner as outlined below.

Remove the door panel

Plug the switch back into the wiring harness.

Check to see if you have power coming into the switch.

Remove the power wires at the motor and check to see if you get power when you operate the switch.

If everything checks out okay electrically, then it's likely that the motor is bad.  However, just to be sure, connect a separate 12V power source (a portable drill battery works well) directly to the motor to be sure it will not run.

You can send a follow up question if there is anything specific that you need help with.
