Towing Issues: hydrolic tow truck pump seal, automobile repair shops, worst case scenario

Question
What the average price on parts and labor for a hydrolic seal for the boom on a 1993 chevy wrecker (tow truck).

Answer
I am assuming you are asking about a hydraulic cylinder on the boom. Are you removing the cylinder from the truck and dropping off the cylinder at a shop? If not, labor prices can vary between Boom up/down or Boom in/out. As you may know the boom in/out has a higher degree of difficulty to remove and reinstall than the up/down cylinders. If you are not removing and reinstalling the cylinders from the truck then the labor price can vary depending on the area you live. Most hydraulic repair shops charge about the same as most automobile repair shops. Also does the cylinder need a total rebuild or just wiper seal. Most light duty seal kits are about $50 to $100. Regardless, the worst case scenario for a total rebuild of seals, packing, polishing, honing if removed from the truck is about $250-$400 for one cylinder. I have heard as much as $500 or more but then it is cheaper just to buy a brand new cylinder with a warranty and replaced it yourself.
