Towing Issues: Towing a car backwards on a car dolly, wheel drive car, steering wheel lock

Question
I have a rear wheel drive car that cannot be flat towed because the manufacturer says it will damage the transmission.  I am told by a car dolly manufacturer that I can put the back wheels on the car dolly, engage the car's steering wheel lock, and pull it backwards.  Is this good advice or will it cause some damage, excessive ware or other problem?

Answer
Ed,

You can tow it backwards, though it is a much rougher ride doing it that way since the weight is all the way at the back. Also, you need to tie the wheel off with the seat belt as well because the steering locks will not always work without moving a little bit.

If you are towing the car for much more than a few miles, then I would suggest towing it forward and disconnecting the driveline at the rear end and tying it up to the frame.
