Towing Issues: transmission problem, tranfer case, drive wheels

Question
Does the drive shaft have to be dropped on a 3500 GMC dump truck with an automatic transmission in ordor to tow about 30 miles along with about 2,700 pounds of wieght in the bed of truck and if so what will happen if not done.

Answer
Hi Travis, To properly answer your question I need the year, 2wd or 4wd, gas or diesel, and speed. If it's 4wd is the tranfer case electric or manual shift. If it's electric do you have electrical power. It does make a difference. Just send me more info. and I can narrow it down for you. A generic response would be any rear wheel drive vehicle should not be towed on it's drive wheels. This is the rule thumb we give to most new or less experienced tow operators because as you can see there are alot of variables. As for signs of a bad transmission, burnt fluid, no gear engagement, abnormal noises in the trans. blown seals and or pressure lines, locked up gears, slipping and non shifting, stuck only one gear. GM is famous for second and reverse only.
