Towing Issues: was this an illegal tow?, tow fee, expired plates

Question
I had parked my car on my street, which has no street signs stating you are not aloud to park on it.  My temp tag was stolen off my car, so i went to get another one.  When i came back my car was gone.  The police station is now claiming that i owe a ten dollar parking ticket, for what i am unsure of and i have to pay the eighty five dollar towing fee.  They claim that my cars license plate was never properly transfered to temp tags and I am recieving a ticket for expired plates in which do not even belong to me. This has never happened to me before and I am unsure of what to do.

Answer
Hi Kayla, Sorry you had to find this out the hard way. If you don't have current registration, current plates, current inspection, and you are parked on any public street, as you know the car will be towed at your expense. It doesn't matter if there was or wasn't a parking sign, just take that out of the equation. You do owe the parking fine and pay it soon, get a receipt! The fine might be for improper registration of a motor vehicle and or expired registration/tags. The tow fee is inline with most other cities. If you have not retrieved your vehicle yet do it soon because all impound lots charge a daily storage fee and admin fee after so many days. As for your plates go to your local tax office or department of motor vehicles to properly license and insure your car. Try to look at this on the brighter side because it would have been worse if you were caught driving it!
