Towing Issues: towing, happy camping, tow weight

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2004 GMC Crew 1500 with a 5.3. I am looking at buying a camper that weighs 7900 lbs. It wont be pulled more than 100 miles and not very often but maybe hilly at times. Will the truck handle this?

ANSWER: More info needed: Is this a 5th wheel or bumper pull? You need to check the towing specs ( can be found on towing hitch or in manual. What is the height of the camper?
Thanks,
Lisa

QUESTION: It is a bumper pull, 11' tall.

Answer
The tow weight should be on the bumper hitch if it's under the 7900 lbs, Take the truck with you and have the seller attach the camper, make sure you don't have any 'tongue weight'  (where the truck lowers to much when the camper is attached) Make sure your brakes are in good shape. (Along with everything else)Is the truck already wired? Plugs match up? Brakes? I'm really glad your getting info and not just hooking up and hitting the open road! It's always good to make often stops to let your tires cool off (and give your legs a stretch)
From what you have told me, the camper is 7900 lbs. If that is empty. Be sure to add the weight of the items you'll be adding. When loading, be sure to level the weight as you load the camper.
Happy Camping,
Lisa
