Towing Issues: buying a car with a tow lien, clean slate, purchasing a car

Question
Is there anything I should know or any paperwork I need when purchasing a car with a tow lien? And why do the license plates go to the dmv because of the "tow lien" ?
Thanks

Answer
The license plates can not be renewed (or another issued to the person). until the towing debt is paid in full. The tag is turned in to DMV and not reused in Florida. If you bought a car at an auction, yes you should have gotten all the paper work you need to apply for your own ins., tag and to register the car in your name. The amount you paid will go toward the debt owed to the towing company. This is not to make your harder, it's to protect you from several things, such as:

The person who failed to claim the car from the towing company, claiming you have their car after the auction.

An auto owner may not bid on a car they owned, therefore you want a clean slate on your new vehicle!
