Towing Issues: Horse trailer, jeep cheerokee, chevrolet gmc

Question
Hi! I have two horses, both about 1k pound each, and a two horse trailer that it about 1k pounds by itself. We have a 1995 Grand Jeep Cheerokee, and we were told that if we continued pulling the trailer, it would mess up the transmision (i think that is what they said) and end up causing a fire. We always make sure over drive is off, so they said that might help. We were looking to get a King Cab truck, so if you have any suggestions, it would be great! thanks!

Answer
Well it does sound right about the advise on the jeep.. Problem with towing anything that is heavy, you have the transmission working harder to do what it is asked to do..
Overheating of the fluid can cause internal parts to overheat.. As to a fire, well that is possible, but it would take a lot to get to that point.

Now as to picking the right vehicle to tow it with that is a loaded question...

Dodge, Chevrolet, GMC and Ford all make great trucks, some of them are real nice even with the extended cab or crew cab... They are starting to rival SUV's in comfort also..
BUT REMEMBER a truck is a truck, so it rides a bit rougher than SUV's.

NOW personally, I do like Ford trucks, and one reason is that they actually do make pickup trucks larger than the one ton rating that others have...

Any vehicle in size ratings over 350 is larger..  If you do lots of hauling, horses, hay and others, then you might look at the F450 Ford trucks...
But this is my personal preference.
