Towing Issues: Aftermarket Tow Package On 2007 Dodge Dakota, hitch load, dodge dakota

Question
On a 2007 Dodge Dakota V8 4.7L Quad Cab 4x4 I am interested in buying, can I add an aftermarket tow package without voiding any warranties? The trailer I now have has a max GVWR 4500 lbs. The 2007 Dodge brochure says the Dakota will pull 6,850 lbs with a payload of 1,390 lbs. The brochure was not clear if that was with or without a tow package. Some dealers said the weights listed in the brochure only apply with a tow package. And one dealer said he wouldn't advise putting an aftermarket tow package on.

Answer
I don't know exactly what comes with the tow package, but usually some different springs, shocks, maybe bushings, sometimes a different tranny or radiator/coolers.  Of course the factory hitch.

I would check with your dealer on what they can say about the warranty, a dealer will void a warranty on an expensive repair for anything they find out about, so if you put a Class IV hitch on the back, they will ask what you have been towing.  Up to you what you say.

I would add a class IV hitch, load equalizing attachment, and a tranny cooler.  Make sure your tires are up to the load, the hitch will add about 330 pounds to the front and rear axle load before you put anything in the truck in the way of passengers and luggage.  BE sure to add anything you carry in the trailer to the load.
