Towing Issues: 2003 Jeep Wrangler, jeep wrangler, auto enthusiasts

Question
Hi From Australia.  I am looking at purchasing a Jeep and have heard that they are not very good for towing a trailer with boat etc.  Is this true??

Answer
Assuming the Jeep is equipped to handle the weight of the boat/trailer, then a Jeep makes a very good tow vehicle.  Now I do need to qualify that with this:

If the Jeep you are talking about is the very short older Jeeps, or even the short wheelbase modern Wrangler, AND the boat is rather large, you run into the problem that the longer the wheelbase, and heavier the vehicle, the more stable the tow combination is.  OR, the shorter the wheelbase and lighter the vehicle, the worse it will handle.  Thus the longer wheelbase newer Jeeps make better tow vehicles in general.

That is why the Suburban (American GM, not sure if they sell a version in Australia) is such a popular tow vehicle with those that have heavy/long trailers.  VEry stable.

By the way, auto enthusiasts here in America are very jealous of your Aussies with your V8 powered rear wheel drive sedans.  (our "new" GTO was based on a Holden I believe) Seems the American parents of your companies are too wimpy to make real performance sedans much anymore when the rest of the world realizes that RWD performance is what is selling today!

Thanks for your question.
