Towing Issues: Trailer wiring, trailer wiring diagram, toyota 4runner

Question
I recently bought a small 4x8 kit trailer.  The build went ok.  The wiring is another story.  I have wired this trailer twice now.  I wired it with the factory wiring kit, but running lights would not work.  I wired again with different wiring kit and lights, but same problem.  I thought that my plug on the vehicle was bad so I checked to see if the running lights worked on another trailer I have.  The running lights work on that trailer.  I am pluged into a 97 Toyota 4runner.  Recap: no running lights on new kit trailer, but running lights work on old trailer.
Thanks for your help.

Answer
I find that most wiring problems with trailers come down to a bad ground.  Don't depend on the hitch to provide the ground, run a ground wire from the tow vehicle through the connector to the frame of the trailer.  make sure the connections are clean and tight.

Other than that, if the tow vehicle plug has running lights, and the trailer doesn't, y9our problem is in order:

1.  wrong wiring in the connector
2.  Wrong wiring leading to the running lights
3.  Bad light fixtures (but all four not working?  then  it goes back to the plug or the ground.

Here is an excellent site for trailer wiring:
