Towing Issues: 2006 Ford Escape, factory transmission, factory tow

Question
We just purchased a 2006 Ford Escape V6 4 wheel drive, automatic with the assumption we could pull a pop up with a weight of 2,700 pounds.  We thought the escape had a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.  Now we're not sure since reading different websites.  We do not have a built in hitch, so does this mean that we cannot tow that much weight?

Answer
According to Edmunds.com the FOUR cylinder Escape AWD has a capacity of just 1500 pounds.

The V6 3.0L version goes to 3500 pounds, that is MAXIMUM towing capacity and probably assumes the vehicle has the factory tow package.

You will be near the limit if properly equipped but it should do the job.

I would consider an auxiliary transmission cooler if you will tow a lot and especially if in hot areas and/or mountains.  Sometimes the factory "transmission cooler" is not very heavy duty.

Also, I highly recommend a load equalizing hitch.  It might be a tiny bit of overkill on a fairly light trailer, but since you are close to the load limit (and remember that everything extra you put IN the trailer or IN the Escape adds to the load.  take that into account.  Weight everything you put inside the trailer!

Check out hitches by Reese or Draw Tite (just google those names) they cost a little bit, but last forever, can easily be sold or used on your next vehicle, and add a BUNCH of stability and safety while protecting the suspension and ride quality of your Escape.  They make light to mid-range versions and I won't tow without one.

Be sure to put close to 10% of the trailer weight on the hitch ball, that will be about 300 pounds!  That is why you should use a load equalizing hitch.
