Towing Issues: Sale of car that was towed, ford pinto, california policy

Question
Can tow companies sell your car without giving you notice of the intent to sell?  My car was towed and I did not have the money to get it out, then when I called to get the balance due they told me that they sold my car.  They never told me that they were planning on selling it.

Answer
well first of all, most all towing rules and regulations dealing with the lein process (how they can sell the vehicle)

In most states, they have notifications which are sent by either the tow company or the local police or state..  Hard to say who actually is supposed to do that..  NO INFO on what state you are in..

BUT one concern is that they notify the last registered / legal owners of the vehicle... Now if it's your car but you have not changed it over to your name and address, how can they notify you of the pending sale ???

Another factor, in some states (California comes to mind) the towing company can sell vehicles based on the appraised value if its under a certain level...  For example if you have a 1971 Ford Pinto that is wrecked, it is not a $ 20,000 car.. They have a method to dispose of the vehicle in like 2 weeks or so...  The California policy is complicated (about 4 pages) but that might also of been a factor..

BUT AGAIN, without specific information on what state this is, I really can not provide a solid answer...
