Towing Issues: towing capacity of 2001 Expedition 2wd 4.6 V8, reese hitches, drawtite hitches

Question
We are wanting to purchase a travel trailer, and we are not sure of the towing weight capacity of the expedition.  The camper is 4580lb shipping weight.  We do not have a hitch package. That is to be added by the trailer dealership. What are your thoughts?

Answer
Maximum towing capacity is 8100 pounds, but that is only if the vehicle has the heavy duty tow package installed.  If you have the frame mounted recieve style hitch, chances are you have that much capacity.

I highly recommend you buy a Load equalizing hitch, check them out at:

or

Also, if your trailer is over about 16 feet long, consider adding the anti-sway attachment to the hitch.  A setup with ball mount, bars, anti-sway etc, may run $600 or more, but it can be used for a lifetime, and can be sold for at least some of what you pay for it.  You may be able to find used ones, but I recommend buying new.

I can't stress enough that a good load equalizing hitch will make every mile more comfortable, safer and easier on your vehicle.  Spend the money on a correct hitch setup.
