Towing Issues: more qs, reese hitches, weight distribution hitch

Question
QUESTION: okay, my husband called our mechanic and they told him that the trans cooler was already on it (we bought it with a tow package)...true?

now he's being told that we need weight distribution hitch/kits...true?  could you recommend one?  is this a rentable item?

and ... sry i didn't say so earlier our camper is 85 sunline t-1750...gross vehicle weight 2345.

are we cool...or no?

thanks for the other answers...so far you've been the best help out there.

ANSWER: If you have the tow package you probably do have an auxilliary transmission cooler.  Adding another one won't hurt, but probably  isn't necessary.

I highly recommend a weight distributing hitch.  You would not need a heavy duty hitch, but there are all sorts of options.

A weight distributing hitch is more stable and easier on the suspension than any other.  Cost is about $400 to $500 (not including the hitch on the car, but you can use the one you already have probably).

Based on the answer previously, you should be good with the vehicle you have, and a weight distributing hitch would be a good idea, but not absolutely necessary.

Note with the trailer you have you should have about 240 pounds of weight ON the hitch ball.  that is harder on the suspension than putting the same weight in the luggage compartment.  With a weight distributing hitch, you will have 120 pounds on the rear suspension and 120 pounds on the front suspension, keeping the vehicle level and making towing a LOT safe.  Get the equalizing hitch, they are well worth the money and the extra minute or so to hook them up.

Plus they hold their value, you can use them for decades, or sell them on E-bay at any time.

QUESTION: hi, i'm back.  okay weight distribution hitch: if you hold your fingers in a V...we have all the parts except where your fingers meet...what's that part called?  (meaning we have the "fingers" and the thingers that the tips of the "fingers" attach to on the camper...but what's that other thing?

Answer
I gave you everything you need in the links to the two web sites.  They have excellent tutorials and pictures.  But just because I am nice.....

A weight distributing hitch includes:
1.  Ball mount and torsion bar mount.  This is a big chunk of steel that slides into the hitch like a regular mount, but has provision for the torsion bars.

2.  Two torsion bars that hook into the ball mount and then go in a V on either side of the trailer frame.  In the basic Weight distributing hitch (the anti-sway attachment isn't really needed till you get to 20+ foot long trailers for the most part) the ends of the bars have short chains on them that hook into:

3.  Two snap up brackets that mount over the frame rails of the trailer, line them up with the ends of the torsion bars and use the links to put tension on the bars.  A round bar, usually aluminum comes with the hitch to "snap up" the brackets and put tension on them.  Also a couple clips come to hold the brackets once tensioned.

Please go back and do some reading on the two sites I gave you.
