Towing Issues: refusal to release towed vehicle on weekend, police tows, storage fee

Question
My sister's son was pulled over driving without a license in Anderson, California
The police towed the car on Friday night and the police released the car on Saturday morning,
Her mother in law agreed to pick up the car for her on Saturday and when trying to call the tow company they would not release the car to anyone and said there was a 30 day hold on it.  The police said no and signed a release for the car but the tow company refused to allow her or anyone to pick it up.  We went there on Monday during their normal business hours in the morning since they would not release it on the weekend and they still charged a storage fee for friday, saturday, sunday and monday even though we picked it up by 9:30 am.  My question is since they refused to release it on the weekend can they legally charge a storage fee for all those days.  We would have picked it up within or less then 24 hours after it was towed.

Answer
Well, when vehicles are towed and holds placed on them by the police departments, you will see different conditions and requirements..
California does have many laws regarding police tows and holds, and it might be good to do some searching the DMV site for information...  Also check with the police department and see what they have for requirements regarding releases and holds..

Now a lot of issues are due to policies on releases... You found that issue and it seems to be common...

As to the storage issue over the weekend, you might have been talking to an answering service, who follows a script... They usually have no authority to make chances or do things like change paperwork...

I am sure that the tow company management would of been able to do things, if they knew about it. But from the sounds of it you already paid and picked it up...  You can check with them and see if you can get any thing changes.
