Towing Issues: towing a rear whell drive vehicle, chevy s10, 2 quarts

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have a 2000 chevy s10 PU that I want to tow behind my RV. It is a 5 speed manual transmission, with rear wheel drive. Can I tow it with all wheels on the ground? I have gotten conflicting answers.
TIA Jay

ANSWER: Well our towing rules and limits for when vehicles are broke down say that it has a 35 mph limit for 50 miles when the drive wheels are on the ground...

But I know that some RV sites say that it can be done also.. Never have figured out why it can be done with an RV  and not a tow truck...

I get the same conflicting answers as you do... I would say that best answer is to keep checking and to see what a mechanic at a transmission shop says also...

QUESTION: Hi Rich, Towed my chevy s-10 (4 wheels down) 200 miles roundtrip. Before-hand I jacked up one side of the truck about 45-50 degrees and added 2 quarts of tranny oil/grease.So far so good. I am a little nervous. Have you or your readers ever heard of this fix? Rear wheel drive disconnect was $1100.00 installed. Oil/grease $4.
Any feedback would be great......I'll keep you posted.
PS Alternator went on the truck today....can't be from the towing....right??

Answer
Way back when in the stone age of towing, Mercedes had instructions to add 1 or 2 quarts of transmission fluid when we were towing one with the drive wheels down.. But that was like in 70s or early 80s..

Now as to the drive line disconnect, yes they are expensive but you can also just crawl under it after hooking it to the motorhome so it does not roll, and removing the 4 bolts which hold it in place..

Or you can go the cheaper route and get a tow dolly which will work for most any vehicle you intend on towing..(remember most people trade cars every few years.)

As to the alternator going out,  LOL yeah  blame the tow guy for it and see if he will pay for new one.. LOL
