Towing Issues: Illegal Towing, speed limit signs, cruise patrol

Question
I was visiting a friend (in NJ) and had parked my van in his apartment complex. The complex had posted a sign at the entrance saying that parking was not allowed near "Yellow Curb".

I parked my van in a spot that had a yellow line (a rectangle was created on the road), the curb was not painted at all and also there were no signs posted.

The towing company appointed by the management towed my vehicle and demanded $150 for releasing it. There was nothing in that area that said or indicated that parking was not allowed there.

Can this be termed as an illegal tow? please advice.

Thanks

Answer
Well either someone called the tow company or they have a contract to cruise (patrol) the lots looking for violators...

Now I have to say one thing, signage for properties sometimes is by law required to say certain things and that at times causes problems   "Near yellow curb" can mean any yellow marked spaces, or it can specifically mean yellow curbs.  Also of note, tow away and warning signs are routinely stolen, removed or vandalized in the hopes that it can turn a legal tow into an Illegal tow.. Not saying it happened but its common...

Now the price is about normal for doing the tows, so can not say much about that... (I know in California and other places that would be considered cheap)

One note I wish to make about tow away signs...

I get so many questions about the requirements of signs and if they are supposed to be in EACH SPACE or in every language in order to be legal or fair..  In defense, why are speed limit signs and other traffic signs NOT posted every 30 feet or so....  Its because the basic intent is to provide the message at intervals...

That is why most parking lots have signs at the entrances where EVERYONE COMES IN and EXITS..  If you were to cut though a lawn and not use the entrance at all, would a parking rule sign apply if you parked ???
