Towing Issues: 86 Toyota 4Runner, Automatic 22re engine, rear driveshaft, toyota 4runner

Question
I tow on a tow dolly with the front end on the dolly. Do I need to disconnect the driveshaft? Also I used to tow with the rear end on the dolly but one time the front end started swaying back and forth real bad at freeway speeds, what would cause this??  Owen

Answer
Some sites recommend taking out the rear driveshaft to be sure.  Check with a Toyota dealer though.

As for towing with the rear wheels on the dolly, the sway was because you probably didn't tie the steering wheel so it can't move.  A loose suspension (worn) can also cause this sometimes.

When towing with the steering wheels on the ground you must tie the steering wheel down tight so it can't move.
