Towing Issues: Charges, police chase, illegal parking

Question
My car was stolen out of my drive way and involved in a police chase. The man wrecked my car into a tree and a towing company picked my car up and won't even let me look at it because the police have a hold on it. Can the towing company or the impound charge me for the time the police hold it? Is there any law stating whether or not they can?

Answer
Well sorry for you being a victim twice.

First of all, the police most likely have a hold on the vehicle so that they can investigate further, with fingerprints or determining who was in the vehicle by witnesses.

Now under some contracts which are between towing services and police departments the vehicle owner is charged for storage of the vehicle. Some of them do not allow for the vehicle owner to be charged for the storage.
The towing fee however is charged for all tows ordered by the police department. Now some areas have set rates and some allow the towing company to set their own rates.

Now your insurance company should cover the fees minus the deductible  (if you have full coverage) {remember you have the option to have full or the state mandated minimum limits.}

State laws are hard to answer if I have no idea of what state. A basic search of towing laws for your state will produce some information on the various state laws.  Now if you are in California then be prepared to read lots of information about towing, but keep in mind that laws will be different for vehicles towed from Private property  (for illegal parking) and then others for accidents or police reasons.

Sorry I could not really help you with specific information.
