Towing Issues: flat tow vs. dolly, tow dollies, tow dolly

Question
I have a LWB Dodge Sprinter based Roadtrek RS Adventurous motorhome. It's rated for 500# tongue wt, and 5000# max tow weight. We own a Scion xB, which we will occasionally want to tow. I'm concerned about towing flat, don't want to damage the Scion or the Roadtrek, and want to have best driveability. But, I hate to have to store a dolly, and they are much more expensive than a tow bar. Can you help me decide?

Answer
well the Scion weights about 2500 pounds, but the difference between flat towing and using a dolly would be the transmission and potential for damages.
Since its a front wheel drive vehicle, I would go the tow dolly route as its quick and easy to use.  Hook to the motorhome and then drive the Scion up onto the dolly and tie it down.  No worries about ruining the transmission.
But I know there are devices out there for towing vehicles behind the motor homes but not really sure how they work.
Based on costs, well around here tow dollies are about 800.00 new, and what is the cost of a transmission or the transmission disconnect device.

If you do not want to store the tow dolly and only are going to use it once a year lets say, then you might consider going to U Haul and renting one ....   Costs are going to be the key here, just depends on the level of usage you would have for the dolly.

Hope this helps
