Towing Issues: Towing Vehicles, there is no replacement for displacement, gawr

Question
I rencently purchased a boat that I have not trailered.  It says on the trailer GVWR =5,200 and GAWR = 2366 kgs.  What kind of vehicle do I need to purchase to safely trailer it?  I like mid sized SUVs.

Thanks! Jennifer

Answer
Jennifer,

There are plenty of mid-sized SUVs out there with tow ratings above 5,000 lbs.  I would check out the Trailblazer and the Durango to name a couple.  My mother has the 05 Durango (without the MDS), and it doesn't even slow down with a 3,000 lb boat behind it.

Remember, in SUVs there is no replacement for displacement (the 'Torque' numbers are more important to you than the 'HP' rating).  The downside being fuel consumption.

No matter the tow vehicle, be sure the trailer's brakes are functioning correctly and are properly maintained and adjusted.  Also, be sure your trailer has brakes on both axles.  Some states only require brakes on the trailer, not both axles.

Good luck,
