Towing Issues: choice of towing 4x4s, toyota landcruiser, rv towing

Question
Hi I am abouy to buy a used 4x4 1992 to 1998 4.2 diesel for towing my Caravan which ways 2 ton approx can you advise me which would be the better choice Nissan Patrol or Toyota Landcruiser Transmission Auto or manual regards Bill

Answer
Bill,

Is this a one time move, or are you planning to tow often?

If this is once only, I would probably go with the Landcruiser and a flat deck trailer.  If you are planning to tow often and would like to use a tow bar, I would have to advise against it.  Tow bars are meant to tow a vehicle behind a much larger truck or RV.

Towing a trailer is much different than a car on all fours.  A trailer will tend to track behind the truck fairly easily, whereas a tow bar equipped vehicle will track on it's own and try to push the tow vehicle all over the road.

No matter what you choose, be sure you are able to get a hitch rated high enough for the load and think about the problems a 24volt electrical system can cause.

Best of luck,
