Towing Issues: towing policy, insurance safety, police departments

Question
my husband got pulled over for something and the officer said that the truck will be towed. So he called me and asked me to drive the truck to a near by friend's house. The officer said that we couldn't do that, that there is a policy stating that the truck had to be towed. so the next morning I had to spend around $200 to $300 to get the truck out. Is there such a policy?

Answer
well, without real specific information I can not answer the question properly..

As a rule however, most Police departments tow vehicles for safe keeping reasons. Now at times some vehicles are not allowed to be driven for reasons such as expired tags, no insurance, safety reasons to name a few.

Providing a second driver usually does not happen as its hard for them to actually wait for another licensed driver to show up to take custody of the vehicle.

As to fees for the towing , it varies from City to City, and even tow company to tow company. Not every city has rates set for tows ordered by police departments. But in some cases they have regulated rates with cover towing and or storage of vehicles.

hope this helps a bit.
