Towing Issues: storage rates for commercial trucks Alabama, tractor trailer units, storage rates

Question
Is there an Alabama State regulated rate for storage facilities on a daily basis when a large commercial truck is being stored in a secured facility while repairs are being conducted, and if so, what is the daily rate and is there a cap?  Is there an average going daily rate used by insurance carriers for large commercial 18 wheelers for storage in Alabama?

Answer
While certain Cities have contracted rates for towing and storage of vehicles towed under law enforcement orders there is no standard state rate for storage of large tractor trailer units..

NOW that being said, remember that most all the storage rates in most every area (city and state around the US) are based on vehicle size...
A lot of storage rates are based on the car sized spaces, a typical car is figured at 10 feet wide and 20 feet long..

So you would have a semi trailer which if 53 feet long taking up 3 vehicle spaces, and if it had a tractor with it then it could possibly take up 5 spaces...

For example here, if a semi trailer was left in a secured storage lot for 48 days, and lets say that the tow company charged $ 24.00 a day for storage of a car and the trailer was deemed to be taking up only 2 car spaces then you would have the following

48 days x $48.00 per day (remember it was taking up 2 spaces) then you would have a storage charge of $ 2304.00

If it was deemed to be taking up 3 spaces then it would be
$ 48 days x $ 72.00 per day (3 spaces) then the bill would be $3456.00

Remember that storage of vehicles does take up ground space and the towing company in order to have the storage yard has to purchase, rent, or lease the space.. That does cost money to "rent the ground" to customers...
Is the land which a trucking company terminal free? or do you have to purchase, rent or lease it ? That would be considered part of your fixed expenses of operation..

Tow companies do not know when or if they will be using the space to store vehicles and as such still have to pay for the land "JUST IN CASE" they have to store vehicles...

As to an average daily rate, well as far as I know there is not any "standard average" rate as each business has to determine their operating costs for each service.

This question interests me as a tow truck driver, I see lots of requests from trucking companies to "SECURE the trailer and its load when the vehicle is in a shop being repaired.. And yes at times they do swap out the loaded trailer with an empty trailer so the freight can be delivered...  Given the size of some companies, it is possible that the trucking company "LOOSES THE TRAILER LOCATION" and as such it sits in the storage yard for an extended period of time.

Plus there are lots of repair shops which are either to crowded to park trailers in, or have fences and gates around them so that the units can not be dropped off at night or weekends when the shop is closed..

I know there is more to this question than meets the eye here..

Please feel free to do a follow up question if you want so we can discuss this issue further..

Hope this helped you...
